Italy

Naples, Behind the Curtain

A bohemian city of vintage finds, theatre and art.

Naples: theatre, San Gregorio Armeno nativity crafts, an espresso machine, leatherwork, the Treasure of San Gennaro and the bay

Coming home as a tourist

I was born in Naples and lived there until I was ten. Since then, I have always returned home as a tourist, never fully belonging to that world, choosing what to take home with me and what to leave behind.

Theatre in everyday life

In Naples, the line between the real and the surreal feels wonderfully thin. Stories of ghosts sit alongside devotion to figures like Maradona. Theatre and art are part of everyday life.

What really matters

The right coffee, carefully stored. A job close to home. The way you make your sauce. Each visit reminds me that what matters depends on the angle you look at it from.

Every stitch has its place

Alongside the city’s theatricality, there is incredibly precise craftsmanship. In the tailoring and leatherwork I admire, every stitch has its place and its purpose.

That contrast stays with me: expressive freedom and rigorous structure, existing together.

A city unto itself

Talking about Naples’ street style and shopping streets in this context feels beside the point. It is a city unto itself, as many Italian cities are, far from trends and full of visceral tradition.

A mix of art, magic and rigorous structure.
