Tokyo

Inside the world of a brand

Tokyo passersby: a woman with a cap, a man, a couple, a woman with a dog, a young man with headphones and a seated person with a cup

I’ve been to Tokyo four times, always staying in Shibuya and spending hours wandering through its shopping streets. The shops, the details, the way people dress: everything catches my eye. These are a few things that have stayed with me.

Retail as an experience

Margaret Howell, Studio Nicholson and Auralee are places I keep thinking about. MUJI, too, for the breadth of its world beyond clothes. Cafés, restaurants and unexpected spaces make these visits feel like an invitation into a brand’s way of living.

At Diesel, there was pasta; at lululemon in Shibuya, a yoga pop-up. The experience continued beyond the products.

Art, retail & identity

Upstairs at Prada

An exhibition at Prada explored silence between couples, communication and the distance technology can create. Encountering those ideas inside a store was unexpectedly moving.

It felt as though the cultural world of Fondazione Prada had entered the shop. I could experience the brand’s references, rather than simply recognise them.

Unexpected connections

In a gallery space in Shibuya, I discovered a display of iconic Martin Margiela pieces. Moments like this remind me that a story doesn’t always need to explain itself immediately.

For me, Tokyo leaves room for connections to emerge through looking. It is something I bring back into my work: thinking about products, spaces and images together.
